Carbon Management Plan

Foreword

At MidCo Care, we are committed to embedding sustainability, carbon reduction and environmental responsibility at the heart of our operations and our values. This plan sets out how we will manage and deliver our carbon reduction journey across all our services and supply-chain.

Introduction

MidCo Care, established in 2013, provides health and social care services across multiple local authorities. We accept our responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—from our buildings to our travel, from our procurement to our behaviours. This plan supports our public commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2045, with interim milestones, and embeds a green thread through everything we do.

Carbon Emissions & Approach

Baseline year: 2021–2022 covering Scopes 1–3. Baseline ≈ 170 tCO₂e. Reporting year 2024–2025 ≈ 148 tCO₂e (~13% reduction).

Our approach

  • Measure and report annually across Scopes 1–3.
  • Interim targets: 50% reduction by 2030; reach Net Zero by 2045.
  • Prioritise: buildings/energy, travel & fleet, procurement, waste & recycling, and behaviours.
  • Work collaboratively with local authorities and supply-chain partners.
  • Maintain transparent governance, responsibility and monitoring.

Buildings & Energy

  • Energy audits across all properties; identify high-consumption equipment and opportunities for renewables.
  • LED lighting, presence sensors, smart metering, efficient HVAC.
  • Move to 100% renewable electricity by 2035.
  • Where feasible: solar PV and air-source heat pumps.
  • Lifecycle planning to replace fossil plant at end-of-life.
  • Per-m² energy targets with an annual dashboard.

Waste & Recycling

  • Eliminate avoidable single-use plastics by 2030.
  • Clear segregation (general, recycling, food where appropriate) across all sites.
  • Supplier partnerships to maximise recycling; explore composting/waste-to-energy.
  • Digitise records to reduce paper usage.
  • Report annually on volumes, diversion from landfill and recycling rates.

Fleet & Travel

  • Gradual replacement with EVs; install charging at main offices.
  • Encourage active travel and public transport.
  • Travel-planning and route optimisation to reduce mileage.
  • Target: fully electric fleet by 2040.
  • Record and report fleet/travel emissions annually.

Procurement & Supply Chains

  • Embed sustainability criteria in all procurements; assess supplier carbon plans.
  • Prioritise suppliers with credible reductions and include sustainability clauses.
  • Align with local authority social value & carbon strategies.
  • Monitor supplier metrics annually; use local suppliers where feasible.

Behaviour

  • Regular staff training on sustainability and energy-saving practices.
  • “Green champions” per location to lead initiatives.
  • Embed sustainability in induction and annual reviews.
  • Quarterly updates: newsletters, dashboards, internal campaigns.
  • Targets for behaviour change (e.g., commuting and paper-use).

Biodiversity

  • Greening of supported-living grounds with native, pollinator-friendly planting.
  • Partner on community tree-planting and habitat creation.
  • Include green-infrastructure in new/refurbished sites where possible.
  • Track credible sequestration opportunities (as supplementary only).

Implementation

Governance & Responsibilities

  • Board oversight; Sustainability Lead coordinates; Service Managers deliver locally.
  • Quarterly Sustainability Steering Group reviews progress and risks.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Annual corporate footprint (Scopes 1–3) benchmarked to 2021–22.
  • Quarterly KPI dashboard (energy, mileage, waste, procurement, behaviour).
  • Annual public update on progress.

Funding & Investment

  • Prioritise high-impact projects; seek grants (e.g., PSDS) as appropriate.
  • Include payback, carbon-savings and social value in business cases.

Risk & Review

  • Annual plan review; maintain risk register (energy costs, supply-chain, regs, tech).
  • If off-track, consider accelerated investment and limited offsetting.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Regular updates to staff, suppliers, local authorities and experts by experience.
  • Opportunities for service-user involvement in green initiatives.

Timeline & Milestones

  • 2025–2027: Measurement, audits, LEDs, EV trials, staff training and monitoring.
  • 2028–2035: 100% renewable electricity, major plant renewals, majority EV fleet, supplier alignment.
  • 2036–2045: Near-zero residuals, full EV fleet, advanced low-carbon tech, limited offsets for residuals.
  • 2045: Net Zero across Scopes 1–3.
